I keep hearing people say “you have to get comfortable with being uncomfortable” to be successful. While I do agree with this, I think that people take it too far.

In order to grow as human beings, we need to push the limits of our comfort zone. Chances are if you aren’t doing anything in your life that makes you uncomfortable than you aren’t growing. I used to be very shy and introverted which would make it much harder for me to ever build a business. I wanted to change this so I got a job in sales in order to force myself to talk to people. It was very difficult at first but it only took a few months before I was able to easily converse with people. My first time public speaking terrified me but after the third or fourth time doing it I began to love it and now it is my passion. As you continually do something that makes you uncomfortable, it will become easier and easier to do.

Why do I bring this all up? In my example, I was always selling something that I believed in. I had something that I wanted to share with people so I left my comfort zone in order to build the skills I needed to reach more people. I was always comfortable with WHAT I was doing even when I was uncomfortable with the HOW. Many people start in a business or join a company where they are asked to do something that at their core they are uncomfortable with. They are told to read a script to people that are close to them or push a product that they don’t 100 percent believe in. In cases like these (and I see it a lot) no matter how many times you perform the action, you will never be comfortable with what you are doing. If you are in a situation like this it won’t take long for you to burn out and give up. If you are worried about turning off your friends and family with that script, figure out a way in sharing your product/service with them that you will feel good about. If you aren’t sure if the product really is good or not then take a little bit of time and find out! If you don’t take care of these things in the beginning then chances are you will never be happy with what you are doing.

So push the boundaries of your comfort zone and do the things you need to do to build healthy habits and grow… But never do something that you are extremely uncomfortable with. You will never feel happy and fulfilled if you do.
